Theremin
Shortly before Thanksgiving, I bought a theremin.
A theremin is an electronic instrument you play without touching. Best known for its "woooo-OOOOO-oooo" sound in old science fiction movies, it's basically a tunable electromagnetic field. Left hand controls the volume, and the right controls pitch and vibrato.
Playing it is so. much. fun. I've been wanting one for a while, and might have put it off a bit longer, but since my whole family was going to be together for Christmas, I went ahead and got it. I kept it as a surprise for my dad, who is a musician. We jammed together, and I played some Christmas songs before dinner when we were all together.
I can play the theme songs from Star Trek - both TOS and TNE. Not familiar with the rest but I'm sure this secures my geek cred. I can also pick out Laura's Theme from Doctor Zhivago, Over the Rainbow, and my personal favorite, Stephen Foster's Beautiful Dreamer.
Anyway, fun.
