Theremin

Shortly before Thanksgiving, I bought a theremin.

A theremin is an electronic instrument you play without touching. Best known for its "woooo-OOOOO-oooo" sound in old science fiction movies, it's basically a tunable electromagnetic field. Left hand controls the volume, and the right controls pitch and vibrato.

Playing it is so. much. fun. I've been wanting one for a while, and might have put it off a bit longer, but since my whole family was going to be together for Christmas, I went ahead and got it. I kept it as a surprise for my dad, who is a musician. We jammed together, and I played some Christmas songs before dinner when we were all together.

I can play the theme songs from Star Trek - both TOS and TNE. Not familiar with the rest but I'm sure this secures my geek cred. I can also pick out  Laura's Theme from Doctor Zhivago, Over the Rainbow, and my personal favorite, Stephen Foster's Beautiful Dreamer.

Anyway, fun.

Sick

Ive spent a lot of time in Betty lately, mostly on account of being sick.

It started with a sore throat over the long holiday weekend. I went to work a couple of days, but between misery and fever I finally felt compelled to go to the doctor. In the ast week I've spent pretty much five days at home, and expect to continue the next two.

This is just as well. The temperature dropped into the twenties, sometimes lower, this week. Even Betty's robust oil-based heat is being chipped away at.

That being said, the bringt colors I chose have really helped keep spirits up. ALong with a bunch of new photos on the walls of my summer adventures, and it's almost like winter isn't happening, and I'm well enough to be ought and about, climbing pyramids, diving the depths, paddling my kayak along the  wavy seas.

My mother's gone in the hospital over the weekend; a bronchial infection turned to pneumonia. She's fine now, but it was a bit of a scare. A friend at work had the flu last week, and so many others are hacking and wheezing and coughing.

So, it's good to have a bit of cheer in this dreary, wearing winter.
